6th grade is a fun, challenging year that brings many changes. In our classroom we work on building a community that teaches tolerance and acceptance. We have high academic expectations of all students.
READING
We learn and practice new strategies to help us develop our reading skills. The students should read 30 pages at home every night. The goal in reading is get 2 AR points every week. Students also write a Friday letter each week that incorporate using skills taught during mini-lessons, making connections, and writing summaries.
MATH
We go to Mrs. Odeen for math. We just finished a fun unit on probability. We did experiments with tossing coins and dice and spinning spinners. We also got to play some Carnival Games and talk about if the game were fair. Now we are learning how to set up and solve proportions and ratios. We are using this information to make healthy food choices and find the best deals at the grocery store.
WRITING
In writing we focus on different genres. We have written memoirs, biographies, and persuasive essays. The students work through the writing process to meet sixth grade writing standards. We finished research papers for History Day. The theme was Conflict and Compromise. The students created outstanding presentations. SOCIAL STUDIES We have been studying ancient civilizations in Social Studies. We have learned about the Early People, ancient Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, and ancient China. STARBASE We had an exciting, fun time and learned a lot at STARBASE in November. The students experimented with rocket carts to learn Newton's three laws of motion, explored the differences in the composition and density of the atmospheres of Earth and Mars, used computers to simulate flight, and toured NorthWest Airlines.
