We play a short game and share everyday in order to make everyone feel safe, welcome, and important. 8:20-9:35 Readers Workshop Students will be focusing on learning skills and strategies to improve their reading. We will be teaching a mini, whole-group lesson and small groups throughout this time. 9:35-10:00 Skills Block Students focus on leveled skills in reading. We focus on phonics, vocabulary, word parts, and grammar. 10:00-10:45 Writers Workshop During writing, students focus on learning how to use the writing process and create large-scale publications in at least three genres. This year, we have been studying Narrative, Literary Non-Fiction, and Poetry. During these units of study, children also focus on grammar and writing craft. 10:45-11:10 Social Studies Content Studies In class, we shared the reading of texts about the United States. We study the USA in regions; Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West. Our class also reads a current events news magazine weekly to practice our new reading skills in a real-life context. We will also have special units on constellations, states of matter, the science of sound, and cryogenics. 11:10-11:35 Accelerated Math To compliment our conceptual learning, we use the Accelerated Math program to focus on basic skills. This program pinpoints the exact basic skill needs for each individual student. This allows for every student to work at their level. 11:35-11:45 Read Aloud 11:45-12:15 Recess/Lunch 12:15-1:10 Everyday Math Here, we work on our math concepts and do the bulk of our math learning. The units of the fourth grade Everyday Math series complement the learning in third and fifth grade, and help develop lifelong math skills. 1:10-1:35 Accelerated Reader Our classroom works very hard to improve reading comprehension and fluency. With the Accelerated Reader Program, students are motivated to read independently and they love to watch their levels go higher and higher! We each have a goal to read at least 100 books this year and to raise our levels at least one full year. 1:35-2:25 Specialist Time Students spend time alternately in Gym, Science, Computer, and Art. | ||||
