| Reading Guided Reading: Students are arranged into flexible, leveled groups to maximize individual learning. We have two teachers who work within the classroom during guided reading time. Daily, Mrs. Mischel-Moe and Mrs. Burton will be working with two different groups each to help students focus on basic reading skills. Students who are not in a group for the time will be studying and practicing skills independently. Accelerated Reader: Students read everyday at their individual levels. Practice makes perfect and there's no better way to practice reading than to read, reAD, READ!!! Every student is required to read at least 30 minutes a night at home. Shared Reading: During this section of our day, we share text in a variety of ways. Sometimes, students read a current events magazine called Weekly Reader. We learn a lot about the world around us and have a great time reading very interesting articles. At times, we also participate in reader's theater or choral readings. Poetry, songs, and rhyme are also class favorites. Word Work: Students are led in activities that help them understand the English language and it's creation. Some topics that we cover are antonyms, synonyms, roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Vocabulary: Students will have a weekly vocabulary list based on Isabelle Beck's research on student vocabulary acquisition. Ask your kids about their weekly words. You will be in awe over their new words. | ||||
