September: 2-Dimensional Geometry

Students are learning about lines, rays, and angles and relating them to 2-dimensional shapes and figures.

September/October: Data and Graphing

Students will learn how to read and create graphs. They will also collect data and learn the landmark data like median, mode, range, maximum and minimum.

October/November: MULTIPLICATION!!!

Students will begin to learn about basic facts and how to study them for memorization. By the end of the year, all students are expected to pass a 3-minute, 50-question basic fact test. Students will also be introduced to basic algebra and equations.

November: Decimals

This is a tricky unit where we will focus on place value and concept of fractional numbers. Many students will struggle with this unit, however, we will revisit this concept two more times throughout the year.

December: Equations and Multiplication

Students will learn the standard way to multiply multi-digit numbers. They will also continue to learn about equations and variables. To make multiplication easier for kids, I will teach them a new way to multiply, called the lattice method. Parents, let your kids teach you about this new way of multiplying. It will amaze you!

January: Long Division and Angles

We will learn how to complete a long division problem and how to name, measure, and classify angles.

February: FRACTIONS!!!

This is are most difficult unit this year. Students will need to work hard to understand these skills. We will learn to represent, compare, and manipulate fractions in real-world situations.

March: Area and Perimeter

Students will focus on how to find the calculations of area and perimeter for squares, triangles, and parallelograms. We will complete a real-life project where students will write proposals for tiling a kitchen floor.

March/April: Percents

We will complete our entire fourth-grade focus of fractional numbers with the use of percents. Students will be able to understand the meaning of percents and convert basic fractions and decimals to percents.

April/May: 3-Dimensional Shapes and Volume

Students will learn about 8 basic 3-dimensional shapes. They will be able to use geometric vocabulary to compare and contrast the features of these shapes. Finally, students will learn about the units of volume and how to calculate the volume of a cube or a rectangular prism.

May: Reflections and Symmetry

We will have a lot of fun with this art-based unit. Students will learn about symmetry and reflection through the use of mirrors. We will create a number of reflection-based pieces of art.

May/June: Rates

This is the unit that integrates all of the learning from this year. We will need to use addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, fractional numbers and equations in order to really understand rates. Don't worry if your child is having difficulty. They will continue this challenging study in fifth and sixth grade!
