In Como Elementary, there are DCD students, learning disabled students, deaf and hard of hearing students, autistic students, deaf-blind students, and young students who are functioning below their peers, but have no distinct label. The students are in small classrooms with teachers and therapists familiar with each disability.
One of the areas special education chose as a prep subject was the area of science. The
Foss curriculum that is used by all elementary schools in St. Paul is also used in Special science. The Minnesota State Standards are also used . Modifications are made in the curriculum to meet the students individual needs and abilities.
This Fall the primary students will study living science or Biology. They will look at trees and animals in Kindergarten and First grade. Others in First grade special science will look at insects. Second graders will look at plants. Third graders will examine the cray fish and the bean seed to understand better how nature helps species to survive and regenerate. This Fall the Fourth and Fifth graders will go on a big river journey as part of earth science. They will look at our environment and how the river affects the lives in its path. They will further investigate the cycles on this planet. The sixth grade will pursue the living science of nutrition . They will examine the components of common foods and the chemical characteristics of the different foods important to human growth.
